Outline

The Indigenous General Merit Scholarships for Undergraduate Students Commencing Term 1, 2024 aims to encourage and assist Indigenous Australian students to undertake study at UNSW.

While Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity is unique and sacred to every person, UNSW scholarships for Indigenous students will require proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity and heritage. If you have not already provided proof of identity and heritage to Nura Gili, any Indigenous specific scholarship offer made by UNSW Scholarships will be conditional upon receipt of proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage to Nura Gili as outlined on the Nura Gili website. Undergraduate Commencing Scholarships - Application Required


You must submit an application to be considered for the following scholarships. More scholarships may be added to this list progressively.


Scholarship Value and Duration Eligibility
Balnaves Foundation Indigenous Medical Scholarship (UGCA1278)

$30,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program

  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing full-time undergraduate coursework study in the BMed MD program.
Note: Students performance at the UNSW Pre-Medicine Program Exit Interview may be taken into consideration.

Faculty of Engineering Indigenous Scholarship (UGCE1028)

$15,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program (up to 5 years)

  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing full-time undergraduate studies in any degree program in the Faculty of Engineering. Double degrees are permitted.
Ausgrid Indigenous Engineering Scholarship (UGCE1495)

$15,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program (up to 5 years)

  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing full-time undergraduate study (single or double degree) in the following degree program:
    • Bachelor of Electrical Engineering
    • Bachelor of Environmental Engineering
Ngiam Tong Yuen Scholarship (UGCE1187)

$10,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program

  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing full-time undergraduate studies in any degree program at UNSW.
Note: Preference will be given to applicants residing at Basser College.

School of Mathematics and Statistics Indigenous Scholarship (UGCE1268)

$5,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program

  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing full-time undergraduate studies in a Bachelor of Science majoring in Mathematics or Statistics. Double degrees are permitted.
Note: Current undergraduate students enrolled in their 1st year of study at UNSW and majoring in Mathematics or Statistics will also be considered.

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be assessed on the basis of:
  • Academic Merit
  • Leadership skills (school, workplace or community)
  • Extra-curricular activities (sporting, cultural activities, volunteer/work experience)
  • Aptitude and commitment to studies in the areas of specialisation

The following scholarship will be automatically awarded. Please refer to the information below regarding the eligibilty and selection criteria.

Scholarship Value and Duration Eligibility & Selection
UNSW Indigenous Undergraduate Business Scholarship (UGCE1328)

$10,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program.

Eligibility:
  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Must have completed the UNSW indigenous Pre-Program in Business, prior to commencing study at UNSW; and
  • Received a full offer to an eligible undergraduate degree program offered by UNSW Business School.
Selection:

  • Scholarships will be automatically awarded to students who have successfully completed the UNSW Indigenous Pre-Program in Business and are commencing an eligible undergraduate degree offered by UNSW Business School.
UNSW Arts, Design & Architecture Indigenous Scholarship (UGCE1390)

$10,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program.

Eligibility:
  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing any UNSW undergraduate coursework degree program within the Faculty of Arts, Architecture & Design. Double degrees are permitted so long as both degrees are owned by the Faculty of Arts, Architecture & Design
  • Preference shall be given to Rural students*.
Selection:
  • Scholarships will be automatically awarded to students on Academic Merit.
Malcolm Cole Indigenous Scholarship (UGCE1097)

$5,000 per annum for the minimum duration of program

  • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander only).
  • Be commencing full-time undergraduate coursework study in the School of the Arts and Media . Double degrees are permitted.


*Check the Australian Standard Geographic Classification Remoteness Areas (ASGC-RA) system map to check your eligibility. All categories other than 'RA1 - Major Cities of Australia' are considered to be regional or remote with the exception of Hobart.

UNSW reserves the right not to award a scholarship, where there is no applicant of sufficient merit, or if the applicant does not meet the scholarship eligibility and/or selection criteria.
