Outline

In recognition of the gifts to UNSW by the family, friends and colleagues of the late Maki Shiobara, UNSW has established The OVRF-Maki Shiobara Scholarship.

Maki Shiobara (1962-2001)

Maki Shiobara was a valued and much loved member of the team at the Cornea and Contact Lens Research Unit at UNSW, which she joined in 1982. As a research optometrist she made outstanding contributions to optical design, understanding of the eye and to the development of safer contact lenses. She led many international research projects, working closely with collaborators in academia and industry, especially in Japan. She was also involved in the education of students', practitioners and educators internationally.

Her role at UNSW went far beyond her professional service. Her friendliness, generosity and unfailing good humour made her a joy to know. Her battle with cancer also showed her immense courage and throughout her fight she remained close to her friends and colleagues. Text provided by Cornea and Contact Lens Research Unit (CCLRU), UNSW colleagues.
