Outline

The Piper Alderman Indigenous Law Student Scholarship was established to assist an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student enrolled in their third or fourth year of an undergraduate Law dual degree program at UNSW.

At the end of one year, the recipient student will be invited to undertake a six week rotating, paid clerkship with the Donor firm. The Donor firm will pay the student in accordance with the level of Legal Services Award that is paid to the Donor firm’s other clerks of the same or similar level. The clerkship will be governed by and subject to a separate contract entered into between the recipient student and the Donor.

Once the recipient student has reached the penultimate year of their undergraduate Law dual degree, they may apply for the two year clerkship program offered by the Donor firm.

Payment of the Scholarship is subject to the recipient being enrolled in a Law dual degree, and having achieved satisfactory academic progress, which is considered to be a pass Weighted Average Mark (WAM) across all courses.

The recipient of the Scholarship must:

  • be an Indigenous student who is of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, and identifies as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander;
  • be a full-time student entering their third or fourth year of a Law dual degree program; and
  • not normally hold any other scholarship or award (except for Youth Allowance/Austudy/Abstudy or other equity scholarship) except with the permission of the Manager, UNSW Scholarship Office.
