The purpose of Louise Brown Memorial Award is to remember the life and work of UNSW student Louise Odette Brown.

The Award will normally have a value of AUD $3,000 for one year, to fund travel and living expenses related to one international internship during the third, fourth or fifth year of the student's combined degree. The terms of the internship will be defined by the Director of Experiential Learning in the Faculty of Law in accordance with the requirements of LAWS3308/JURD7308.

The internship must be provided by an organisation located outside of Australia nominated by the student and agreed to by the Director of Experiential Learning. Such organisations may include, without limitation:

  • Human rights and social justice organisations;
  • Government and non government organisations undertaking legal or legal policy work;
  • A judicial court, tribunal or similar; or
  • Any other legitimate entity engaged in legal practice, advocacy, research or policy.

No guarantees are made that students will be able to do their internship with the organisation of their first choice.

The internship must involve the student travelling overseas to conduct field work, advocacy or research, in order to promote or protect human rights. The Award recipient is responsible for organising their internship with the host organisation. The internship must be approved by the Director of Experiential Learning, UNSW Law or their delegate.
