Outline

The purpose of this award is to provide financial support for students to gain direct exposure to different styles of lawyering in practice by undertake an internship. This award will assist with payment of airfares, accommodation, visas and other costs of international travel.

Internship

The internship must be provided by an organisation located outside of Australia nominated by the student and agreed to by the Director of Experiential Learning. Such organisations may include, without limitation:

  • Human rights and social justice organisations;
  • Government and non government organisations undertaking legal or legal policy work;
  • A judicial court, tribunal or similar; or
  • Any other legitimate entity engaged in legal practice, advocacy, research or policy.

The Award recipient is responsible for organising their internship with the host organisation. The internship must be approved by the Director of Experiential Learning, UNSW Law or their delegate

No guarantees are made that students will be able to do their internship with the organisation of their first choice.

The Faculty of Law is responsible for managing all academic requirements of the UNSW Law Internship subject.

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be currently enrolled in the third, fourth or fifth year of an undergraduate Bachelor of Laws combined degree program
  • Be eligible to enrol in the subject LAWS3555/JURD7555 (UNSW Law Internship). An applicant who has previously completed the subject is not eligible to enrol again in that subject, and is therefore not eligible for the award

    Selection

    Each applicant will be assessed on:

    • Academic merit;
    • You will automatically be considered for this award based on your enrolment in LAWS3555/JURD7555.
