Outline

The Scholarship is established to encourage students to undertake undergraduate study (including combined degrees) at UNSW with a Mathematics major or study plan, and to pursue a career in teaching Mathematics upon completion of their program of study.

Eligibility

To be eligible applicants must:

  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • have completed the Higher School Certificate (or equivalent qualification) in the year prior to commencing study at UNSW, or two (2) years prior to commencing study provided they have not undertaken any tertiary study in the meantime.
  • be commencing full-time undergraduate study in the Bachelor of Science or combined Bachelor of Science program at UNSW, with a major or study plan in Mathematics.
  • recipients must have achieved an ATAR (or equivalent) of at least 85 with a Mathematics and Mathematics Extension 1 total of at least 115 OR a Mathematics Extension 1 and 2 total of at least 160.
  • include a statement of no more than 500 words explaining why they wish to become a Mathematics teacher, and provide an academic and general reference from their High School Mathematics teacher.

Selection

Applicants will be assessed on the basis of:

  • Academic merit
  • Mathematics (Mathematics Extension 1 and 2) results.
  • a statement explaining why they wish to become a Mathematics teacher.
Consideration will also be given to potential to contribute to and participate in the life of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, through involvement in such activities as the Student Mathematical Society (MathSoc) or mentoring younger students

Interviews

Interviews are not required for this Scholarship
