Outline

The Scholarship has been established to attract high performing rural students to study Civil Engineering at UNSW in areas of interest to the RTA. To provide high performing students with opportunities to gain industrial experience with the RTA while they are completing Engineering studies at UNSW, so that they will maximise the development of their potential and skills through the direct and rapid linking of pratical and theoretical knowledge. To provide the RTA with opportunities to network with elite students and staff in areas of interest and relevance in Engineering at UNSW. To assist in developing a pool of high performing Engineering graduates for potential further employment with the RTA.

Selection

To be eligible for the Scholarship, applicants must be Australian Citizens or have been granted Permanent Resident Status by 31 October of the year preceding commencement of studying for the Enginnering qualification. Applicants must be completing the NSW HSC (or equivalent examination) in the year of the application or the previous year (but must not have commenced tertiary study) and be proposing full-time study in the first year of the relevant Bachelor of Engineeering program in the UNSW Faculty of Engineering. The applicant’s family should have lived in a rural or isolated area of Australia for at least four years of the applicant’s High School studies. Rural areas will be guided by the Commonwealth’s Accessibility/Remoteness Index of Australia (ARIA) and the Rural Remote and Metropolitan Areas (RRMA) classification. A scholarship recipient must normally maintain enrolment in a normal full-time load. Each applicant will be assessed on the basis of interview performance, academic merit, aptitude and commitment to the preferred program of study, interest in traffic and transport issues, willingness to undertake Industrial Training with the RTA and personal qualities (for example, extra-curricula activities, evidence of leadership skillsand potential to contribute to the wider life of the University). Scholarship recipients will be strongly encouraged to undertake 10 - 12 weeks Industrial Training with the RTA over the Summer Vacation period for Years 1, 2 and 3.
