Outline
Lilian Cohen was born in 1908 at Mookerawa near Stuart Town, between Orange and Wellington. Her father was killed in the last days of World War I and she and her mother left a large extended family and moved to Sydney.Lilian attended Sydney Girls High School and Sydney Teachers College. She was a gifted teacher, especially with children with no experience of education or economic stability in their homes. After 18 years at home, she returned to teaching in 1956 and was soon appointed Deputy Principal of a school in a troubled area of Sydney.
"Lilian let all children be themselves and encouraged them to concentrate with full attention - of mind, heart and soul - on whatever matter was at hand, from mathematics to playing hopscotch to feeding the chooks. This was her gift to us all."
- Janet Donald (daughter)
